Ready to race: Red Bull series takes off

The 2008 Red Bull Air Race World Series will visit 10 cities in nine countries, including a return trip to San Diego. A second stop in the Midwest is expected to be announced soon. Other cities include London, Budapest and Perth, Australia.

Virginia Aviation Ambassador Program suspended

The Virginia Aviation Ambassador Program, which rewarded pilots for flying to the state's 66 public use airports, has been temporarily suspended due to low aviation revenue collections, according to officials with the Virginia Department of Aviation. Formed in 2005, the program has attracted 137 participants, who won prizes such as pins and flight jackets according to how many airports they visited. State officials encourage pilots to continue flying to the state's airports, where they can collects stamps in a special Aviation Passport. When funds become available, the agency hopes to resume providing awards to those who complete the program, officials said.

Hawker Beechcraft Acquisition delivers 150 in 4th quarter

Hawker Beechcraft Acquisition Co., LLC (HBAC) delivered 150 business and general aviation aircraft in the fourth quarter. Deliveries for the year totaled 430, which included those delivered by Raytheon Aircraft, the predecessor business to HBAC.

28th Annual Illinois Ultralight/Lightplane Safety Seminar

The 28th Annual Illinois Ultralight/Lightplane Safety Seminar is slated for March 8 in Springfield, Ill. The seminar, sponsored by the Illinois Ultralight Advisory Council, the Illinois Department of Transportation, and the FAA, is for ultralight and sport pilots.

35th Anniversary celebration announced for The Beechcraft Heritage Museum

The Beechcraft Heritage Museum in Tullahoma, Tenn., is planning a 35th anniversary celebration during its annual convention, slated for Oct. 15-19. The event, which is being held in conjunction with the T-34 Owners Association, is expected to bring together an estimated 100 examples of vintage and modern Beechcraft models, with as many as 80 additional restored T-34 Mentor aircraft.

Texas Fly-In Scholarship needs applicants

The Texas Fly-In Scholarship is looking for a few good pilots. Organizers of the former Texas Fly-In launched the scholarship program to help young people pursue education in aviation. The scholarship fund will award up to $2,000 to high school and college students (ages 16-22) to further their flight education.

The next generation StingS3 also was unveiled at the Sebring Expo. Built by TL-Ultralights and distributed in the U.S. by SportairUSA, this LSA has a new, fully-tapered wing and redesigned elevator trim. The exclusive GreenLine EMS engine monitoring system, designed by I-K Technologies specifically for the Sting, also is now standard.

Cessna SkyCatcher to be built in China, assembled in the U.S.

Cessna's new LSA, which will be built in China by Shenyang Aircraft Corp., will be reassembled at three Cessna authorized service stations in the United States: Eagle Aviation in West Columbia, S.C., Yingling Aviation in Wichita, and Southwest Platinum Aviation in North Las Vegas. Cessna will ship the SkyCatcher's engine and avionics, along with raw materials, from the United States to Shenyang. The LSAs then will be shipped back to the U.S. for assembly.

RAM Aircarft LP authoried as a Designated Alteration Station

RAM Aircraft LP of Waco, Texas, has became the newest company to be authorized as a Designated Alteration Station (DAS). The certification allows RAM to issue STCs, as well as special airworthiness certificates, for aircraft that are altered under an STC and require flight tests, and amend standard airworthiness certificates for those aircraft. Since the company was founded in 1976, RAM engineers have earned approval for more than 113 STCs for engine, airframe and propeller upgrades, as well as more than 800 FAA-PMAs.

Special Federal Aviation Regulation announced for the Mitsubishi MU-2B

The FAA has finalized a Special Federal Aviation Regulation (SFAR) that creates new pilot training, experience and operating requirements for the Mitsubishi MU-2B. Besides mandating a comprehensive standardized pilot training program, the rule also requires use of a standardized cockpit checklist and the latest revision of the Airplane Flight Manual. MU-2B operators also must have a working autopilot on board, except in certain limited circumstances. Owners must comply with the SFAR within a year.

Wings of Hope opens new medical Relief and Air Transport center

Wings of Hope, which calls itself the largest volunteer aviation charity in the world, recently opened its new Medical Relief and Air Transport (MAT) center in St. Louis. The center "provides a dignified and comfortable place for patients and families awaiting transport to hospitals all over the country," according to officials with the non-profit organization. The center has a special entrance for patients, a triage center and space for the volunteer doctors, nurses, pilots and EMTs who comprise the volunteer staff.

Cirrus leases former Northwest Airlines hangar at Duluth Intl AP

Cirrus Design Corp. has inked a deal to take over a former Northwest Airlines hangar at Duluth International Airport (DLH) in Minnesota. The 189,000-square-foot hangar, which is next to Cirrus' headquarters, will be used for research and development of the company's new single-engine jet. The lease with the Duluth Economic Development Authority is for 25 years, with an option to renew for another 25 years. As part of the agreement, Cirrus officials promised to create 200 new jobs by 2013.

DayJet adds two new airports to its network of "DayPort" airports.

Air taxi company DayJet continues to expand, adding two new airports, Naples Municipal Airport (KAPF) and Savannah/Hilton Head International Airport (KSAV), to its network of "DayPort" airports. The company now flies to 45 destinations across Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi and South Carolina using its fleet of Eclipse 500 VLJs.

Sun 'n Fun's Splash-In moves to Lake Agnes

Sun 'n Fun's Splash-In will move from Lake Parker at Lakeland, Florida, to nearby Lake Agnes at Polk City, adjacent to the internationally known Fantasy of Flight aviation museum. The Splash-In is a two-day event dedicated to amphibians and seaplanes. This year's Sun 'n Fun is slated for April 8-13 at Lakeland Linder Regional Airport in Lakeland.

Garmin discontinues production of GNS480

Garmin has discontinued production of the GNS 480, the first panel-mounted GPS approved for WAAS. Company officials noted that its sales have "significantly declined" as more customers are buying the GNS 430W/530W WAAS units. While GNS 480 production has stopped, the company is committed to supporting the thousands of GNS 480 units in the field "for years to come," officials say.

New aviation radio launches in Jacksonville Florida

A new aviation radio show was launched earlier this month. Called the "Flighttime Radio Show," it was created by pilots Brian Kraut and Milford Shirley, both members of EAA Chapter 193 in Jacksonville, Florida. The show is on the air Saturday mornings from 9 a.m. to 10 a.m. (EST) on WBOB AM 1320 in Jacksonville. It also will be simulcast live on the Internet at 1320WBOB.com. All the programs will be archived at FlightTimeRadio.com, as well.

New call-in-show on the internet from ELITE Simulation Solutions

Also new is a call-in talk show on the Internet from the folks at ELITE Simulation Solutions of Oviedo, Florida. Known as the "ELITE Simshow," it airs Thursdays from 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. Listeners must download the free Skype program at Skype.com, which will allow them to speak directly to the show's host, ELITE's Stephen Gatlin, and his guests. The program also will be available for download as a podcast from ELITE's website.

Real-time weather around the clock in Memphis

Pilots in the Memphis, Tennessee, area will have access to real-time weather around the clock, thanks to the installation of Belfort DigiWx II AWOS systems at General DeWitt Spain Airport (M01) in Memphis and Charles Baker Airport (2M8) in Millington. The systems report wind speed, direction and gusts, temperature, relative humidity, cloud height, FAA certified altimeter and FAA certified visibility. At DeWitt Spain, the information is available over the Unicom (122.7), via telephone and on the Internet. At Charles Baker, the information is available over the Unicom (122.8), telephone and online.
